Bo-Kaap CRU maintenance under way

The City of Cape Town is carrying out maintenance and upgrades to its Freedom Court residential units in Schotsche Kloof, Bo-Kaap. The R660 000 project is one of several City maintenance projects taking place as part of the City’s commitment to improving the lives and living conditions of residents

The Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi and officials in the Human Settlements Directorate visited the area to see the work being completed.

'The upgrades to sections of Freedom Court include new ceilings and roofing as well as the installation of gutters and downpipes, among others. Our teams and contractors started with the required work in February and the project will be completed in the coming weeks, if all goes as planned.

'We are happy with the progress being made and we look forward to seeing more work and upgrades being done in more areas of the metro. The City's Community Residential Units (CRUs) are an important part of the City's available affordable housing, which provide homes to hundreds of thousands of vulnerable residents across the city.

'This project will cost more than R600 000 and is one of several projects currently under way. The City is committed to improving the lives of tenants and we thank them for their patience while the work continues. The City owns approximately 50 000 rental units that are located across various areas of the metro, making it one of the largest landlords in the country. The maintenance task is immense and largely, one of the biggest reasons for repairs is due to vandalism. 

'The City has an open door policy and we encourage tenants to reach out to us with their maintenance requests and follow ups,' said Councillor Booi.

Approach the City:

Tenants are encouraged to make contact with the City's relevant housing office in their area for their maintenance requests. When service requests are logged, clients are provided with a reference number, which they can use to enquire or follow up.
